Programme Overview

The MSc in Global Health Management  programme combines theoretical foundations with real-world applications in health systems, economics, management, and policy to equip learners with the knowledge and skills to lead and innovate in health systems worldwide. 

Designed for aspiring leaders in Health and Social Care, Health Management Consultancy, and International Development, the programme will help to develop core competences in strategic management, innovation and systems change, resource management, health economics and finance, and evidence-based decision-making. Graduates will be well-positioned to drive impact across local, national, and global healthcare settings.

Learning Outcomes

The key learning outcomes expected of graduates of the programme are the ability to:

Critically appraise health management issues and apply evidence-based and innovative approaches in addressing these issues efficiently and effectively, taking a global perspective.

Critically reflect on one’s performance, the performance of others, and the influence of various global health contexts.

Evaluate robust and established management and leadership theories and strategies and apply them decisively to practice, using real-life case studies in different settings across the globe.

Comprehensively employ analytical, research, and management-relevant problem-solving skills, communicate complex ideas effectively and persuasively, and work collaboratively with others within health systems, organisations and services taking a systems approach.

Modules

Contemporary Issues in Global Health

The module aims to introduce terms and concepts that underpin global health discourses, policies, and practices, and to provide an overview of key public health issues, challenges, and responses at local, national, and global levels. It aims to provide students with opportunities to understand the complex international setting of global health, the role of important stakeholders and the need for good governance in global health.

Applying Management Concepts and Theories in Global Health

The aim of this module is to develop students’ entrepreneurial and innovative capabilities; the theoretical knowledge necessary to promote international competitiveness; and the practical skills to drive innovation within whichever context they find themselves.

Public Health, Policy and Politics

Public health, policy and politics are intrinsically intertwined. This course helps students to acquire and develop the necessary skills to critically evaluate and appraise policy development and policy making processes in relation to public health issues and the role of local, national, regional, and supranational organisations in developing and implementing those policies.

Health Needs Assessment

Tackling health inequalities and ensuring equity is an important role for global health care managers and leaders. An understanding of health needs assessment is important in tackling health inequalities and ensuring that the unmet health needs of populations are met by informing decision-making on the planning and deploying of resources to address the health priorities of local populations. This module focuses on understanding health needs assessment and linking it to healthcare priority setting. Methods and tools for Health Needs Assessment will be explored and applied to real life case studies.

Management, Leadership and Enterprise in Global Health

The course examines how management and managers working in global health operate in different environmental, political, cultural, organisational, and professional context. This will be linked with the management of change, service, organisational level strategy and social innovation. These theoretical and practical strands will be brought to bear on the strategic, operational, and contextual challenges faced by organisations focused on improved health of populations.

Health Economics

Resource allocation is at the heart of decision-making in the health care sector. This module will provide a comprehensive introduction to the key principles of health economics and application to health care decision making. Students will develop a critical understanding and appreciation of the methods of economic evaluation and how health economics can be used to support prioritisation within the wider context of competing demands for health care treatments or services.

Health Systems in a Global Context

The course introduces students to the fundamentals and key building blocks of a health system. The course adopts a global perspective utilizing cases and examples from low and middle-Income and high-Income countries. Specific attention Is giving to current challenges facing health systems Including double burden of diseases and equity. The course also provides an opportunity for students to develop their knowledge on specific countries and health conditions during seminars and a written assignment.

Project Management in Global Health

Implementation of projects is a key part of global health. This module will help you understand key project management concepts, tools and techniques that are relevant for delivering successful projects situating the discourse within health and healthcare.

Dissertation

This module provides students with the opportunity to conduct an independent project which is, at least in part, original in concept. The project will support the students in the development of the understanding and skills required to either carry out primary research or secondary research. The course also helps with the development of professional skills in critical exploration, identification, review, appraisal, and evaluation and use of data in global health.

Entry Requirements

Minimum Academic Entry Requirement

Applicants have to meet any of the following prerequisites:

  • An undergraduate (honours) degree at 2:2, or above.
  • Mature students who can demonstrate enthusiasm for and commitment to study, and who can outline how they have pursued pertinent interests though relevant life/work experience, can apply. We will assess their suitability from the information provided in their application and supporting statement.
Minimum English Language Entry Requirement
  • Applicants who have studied prior qualifications in English requiring IELTS 6.0 or equivalent.
  • The Dynamic Placement Test, with a band score of B2-C1, is also accepted as an equivalent English Language test.
Minimum Age

21 years old or above.
